Study templates
Last updated: November 3, 2026
Study templates let your team build new studies faster by starting from a pre-configured blueprint.
Find study templates under Templates in the left navigation bar. Access templates at the workspace level to view all templates, or from within a team to view only that team's templates.
Templates have two statuses:
Active: Available when someone creates a study.
Draft: Saved but not yet published. Only people who manage templates can see it. New templates stay in Draft until you publish them.
Creating and managing study templates requires the Create and modify study templates and View study templates permissions. These are included in the Admin, Ops Manager, and Researcher default roles.
Why study templates are important
Access control: Choose which teams can use each template, or share general templates with the whole workspace.
Guardrails: Give some users, like newer researchers, a role with Create studies from templates but not Create studies from scratch, so every study they run starts from an approved template. If template controls are available in your workspace, you can also lock specific settings.
Faster iteration: Duplicate templates to build variations on proven studies.
Flexibility: Pre-fill as much or as little as you like. Fields you leave blank are filled in by whoever uses the template.
Create a study template
Start from scratch
Go to Templates > Studies.
Select + New in the top right.
Enter the template details:
Template name: A descriptive name teammates will recognize.
Description: What the template is for, plus any instructions for people using it.
Language: The language participants see.
Access: Entire workspace has access or Only selected teams have access.
Recruitment: In-house recruits from your own people. External Panel recruits through Respondent or User Interviews; choose the provider when you select it. External Panel only appears if your workspace has external panels enabled.
Type: Interviews, Group Interviews, Survey, or Unmoderated test. Survey isn't available with External Panel.
Select Create. The study builder opens on the Plan step.
Convert an existing study into a template
Already have a study set up the way you want? Turn it into a template so your team can reuse it.
Go to Studies, hover over the study, and select the three dots (...). Or, from inside an open study, select the three dots (...) in the top right.
Select Create template from study.
Enter a Template name and choose Access.
Select Create. The study builder opens.
Then, for either:
Configure each section of the study builder. Pre-fill what your team should keep consistent, and leave blank anything researchers should decide.
If template controls are available in your workspace, lock any settings that studies made from this template can't change, such as participant limit, incentive, interview duration, or consent. See Template controls.
On the Review step, select Create template to publish it as Active, or Save & Exit to keep it as a draft.
Questions you add from a question template stay linked to it. Linked questions are locked, and when someone updates the question template, every study template that uses it updates too. Studies already created from those templates don't change. To edit a linked question freely, detach it from its question template.
Create a study from a template
Creating studies from templates requires the Create studies from templates permission. This is included in the Admin, Ops Manager, and Researcher default roles.
If your workspace has the study gallery:
Select Create Study.
Find a template in your workspace's templates. Search, or sort by Newly created, Recently used by team, or Most used by team. Then select it.
If you're on more than one team, choose the Team. Only teams with access to the template are listed.
Select Continue. The builder opens on the Plan step, with the study named after the template. Rename it there.
Otherwise: Select + New study and choose Use a template. Enter a Name, choose the Team and Template, and select Continue.
Then, in the builder:
Review each section. Pre-filled fields reflect the template's intended structure, so take care when changing them. Replace any placeholder text and tailor each section to your study.
On the Review step, fix any validation errors.
Select Publish Study. The study becomes Active and opens in study management.
