Segments are dynamic groups of people within a population. They automatically group people based on the defined filters, like custom property attributes, research engagement history, demographic information, and more.

  • Set it and forget it to organize and manage participants without overhead

  • Drill-in on panel strength for target personas

  • Improve speed and quality of specific study recruitment

  • Leverage data syncs from Salesforce or Snowflake to keep segments fresh

Segment examples may include "Active Customers within Last 30 Days" or "North America Customers over 500 Employees."

πŸ’‘ The people included in a segment will update automatically as their property data is updated through responses to screener or survey questions that have property mapping set up, manual updates to participant properties, Salesforce or Snowflake syncs, or uploading a .csv file with people data.

If a person's Property data changes and they no longer meet the criteria of the filters applied to a segment, they will no longer show in the segment and vice versa - no need to manually manage moving people in and out!

To view segments, navigate to People > select a Population > select the Segments tab. Select the name of any segment to explore the people within.

Create Segments

🚨 Creating and managing Segments requires the "Create and modify population segments" permission. This includes the Rally default roles Admin, Ops Manager, or Researcher.

Create a segment from scratch in a population:

  1. Navigate to People > select a Population to open > select the Segments tab at the top of the table. Select + New.

  2. Enter a Name and Description for your team to identify it easily.

  3. Add filters or filter groups to refine your segment to a specific target group.

  4. As you add filters, you'll see the number of people that currently match these conditions update.

  5. Select Save changes to apply.

  6. At the top of the screen, select the population name to view all segments in the population, and select the segment name to open and view participants.

Save population filters as a new segment:

If you've already perfectly filtered a population down to a target group, you can easily save your filter set as a new segment.

  1. Within a population with specific filters applied, select the Save button in the top right corner and select Save to new segment.

  2. Enter a Name and Description for your team to identify it easily and select Save changes to apply.

  3. At the top of the screen, select the population name to view all segments in the population, and select the segment name to open and view participants.

Filter and Search by Segment

Segments can be used to filter and search for participants, such as to:

  • Add to a study using the "add from existing" participants action

  • Add to another population

  • Search participants within a study

Select the Filters button > + Add Filter or + Add Filter Group > search and select Segments > select from available segments to include or exclude from your results.

Edit Segments

Change the name, description, and filters that define a segment, or delete as needed.

  1. Navigate to People > select a Population > select the Segments tab.

  2. Select the 3 dots ... next to a segment > Edit (or select Delete to remove it fully.)

    • Already viewing the segment? Select the Edit button in the top right.

  3. Select Save changes to apply after making any desired changes.

Admins can view and manage all workspace Segments from People > Database.
