Differences between Segments & Lists

Segments update dynamically by set filters; Lists are updated manually or by new Forms signups.

Segments and Lists are two different ways of organizing participants within a population in Rally, and can improve the speed and quality of study recruitment.

Both Segments and Lists can be used to filter and search for participants, such as to add to a study using the "add from existing" participants action, add to another population, search within a study, and more.

What is the difference between a segment and a list?

Segments are dynamic groups of people created from specific filters or criteria, like specific properties, engagement history or demographics. They automatically update as participant data changes. You can leverage daily automatic data syncs from Salesforce or Snowflake to keep segments fresh.

  • Segment examples: "Active Customers within Last 30 Days" or "North America Customers"

Lists are static groups of people. They're typically created for specific purposes and don't automatically update, except when people that submit a signup form are added to the associated population's dedicated list.

  • List examples: "2024 Conference Attendees" or "Research Program Panel"

To find them, navigate to People and select a population, then select the Segments or Lists tabs from the top of the table to see all within the population.

Admins can view all workspace Segments & Lists from People > Database.
